Tracking the Great
Wildebeest Migration

When organizing a safari to witness the Serengeti migration, understanding the optimal locations to stay is vital, as Wildebeest and Zebra move in a large anticlockwise circuit. The best period for the Masai Mara is from July to October, with June being ideal for the Grumeti River. The annual wildebeest migration, involving over 2 million animals like wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, and topis, traverses from Tanzania's Serengeti plains to Kenya's Masai Mara and back, following food and water sources.

Serengeti National Park’s Great Annual Migration Pattern

The timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration depends entirely on annual rainfall patterns, making it impossible to predict precisely when they will arrive.

Month by month wildebeest migration guide

The months of December and March

The journey of the Serengeti wildebeest migration starts in the Southern Plains, an area often considered their preferred home. Remarkably, this is also where approximately half a million wildebeest calves are born each year, typically in late February or March.

The months of April and May

As the southern plains dry and the rut starts, wildebeest herds start migrating after rains. In April and May, they're often seen moving through Moru Kopjes in South Central Serengeti, beginning their northward journey.

The months of June and July

The peak of the epic wildebeest migration occurs when the herds reach the Serengeti Western Corridor. Here, they face their first major obstacle at the Grumeti River, where hungry crocodiles of the River awaits.

The months of November & August

Between August and November, the great migration reaches its northernmost point at the crocodile-infested Mara River. During this period, the herds cross the river twice, drawing a multitude of animals to these dramatic river crossings.
